DIY instructable for DIY guides

DIY After seeing the sock tutorial posted yesterday, an insightful viewer requested a subsequent DIY guide focussed on how to make DIY guides. Since the Internet was CLEARLY correct in recommending good ideas for blog posts, I have decided to prepare that for you, the Insightful Viewer.

The trick to writing a DIY guide is to know what you’re talking about. If you do not know what you’re talking about, you’re going to need to get a thesaurus. I’ll wait, while you go and find your thesaurus. Got it? Okay, good. Go ahead and light that bitch on fire because you’re going to want to get good and warm before you start. This can take a long time. Also, you may want a milkshake, because who doesn’t want a milkshake? Unless you’re lactose intolerant, in which case, maybe just a glass of whiskey because nobody should ever be exposed to the living hell that is soy-based beverages (or other “near-milk” beverages).

You’re going to need a scratch pad and a pencil, because we’re going to do some pretty intensive numbering. If you’re good at making lists, this step (which we haven’t actually got to yet, so don’t getting ahead of yourself here) should be easy for you. This is probably a good time for you to put some moisturiser on your hands because dry skin is such a pain in the arse. It’s the main reason I hate winter. Well, okay, the main reason I hate winter is because of the shitty reduced daylight and below goddamned zero Kelvin, but the chapped hands and itchy thighs is DEFINITELY not a perk. I have a lot of surface area on my thighs, and when they get itchy, I could be occupied for WEEKS just soaking in the tub with some olive oil.

Incidentally, I use olive oil because it’s cheap and smells nice.

So the first thing you’re going to want to do to make a DIY guide is get all of your material together. Wait. Did I say that already? I should probably number these as I go. You’re going to want to number things as you go.

  1. make a numbered list of things you want to
  1. figure out something you want to show people how to do
  2. get your shit together. Like ingredients or supplies or whatever.
    • take a picture of all of the ingredients or supplies
  3. include a piece of paper and a pencil, because we can’t all be good at making numbered lists.
  4. Start making the thing you’re showing people how to make. Write down what you’re doing.
  5. Add some numbers to that thing you just wrote down. I recommend you just kind of throw them in wherever, like in natural breaks between thoughts. Don’t worry about formatting at this point because computers fuck everything up anyway.
    • Take a picture of whatever you’re making at these points
  6. Take a picture of your list.
  7. Take a selfie
  8. Take a picture of the thing you just made
  9. Take a picture of all the things you started with before you…
  10. Take a picture of the thing you make at the points you put numbered…
  11. Write down what you were doing when you took those pictures
  12. Transfer your list to the computer. Usually you can just take a picture of your list and then upload the picture to, like, Blogger or whatever. If you want to get really fancy, you can type the list out on the Internet and then add the pictures. You should probably do the formatting now.

And that’s it! That’s all there is to making an instructional DIY guide. Probably you’ll get better with practice. I’ve been doing this for two days now and I’m pretty good at it.

I’d Like – not having anything useful to add – but the button doesn’t load (it did fine a week ago – what changed?).

    Alicia!

Nothing has changed on my end! I don’t know what the issue might be. The only suggestion I have is to try clearing your cache/history?
