I’m a firm believer in “if it were easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing.” There ought to be challenges in everything that is *meaningful*.

I think the state of arts, culture, & in many cases, science education is in pretty bad shape in this country. We aren’t teaching people why these things are important. We don’t know how to value these things.

The funny thing, is often supporters of cuts like this will counter with “What, do you want them to raise taxes instead? Do you want your TAXES to go UP?” To which my response is “Uh, yeah, sure.” I think a lot of people would be perfectly happy with a tax raise to cover the stuff that is important to them.

Of course, the real problem is that whole “stuff that is important to them” bit varies a lot from person to person.

I’m angry about the cuts to parks and museums. Maybe it’s part of a bigger plot to quash children’s curiosity about the world?

Yes, I’m afraid that of all my friends, Cindy probably gets the worst of me because I literally treat her like a sister. Which is to say, without fear of reprisals. She justifiably doesn’t always like that very much, and then I feel bad, because I love her always.

My Young Man ™ has also seen the rougher side of my temper much more often than most of his predecessors, probably because I trust him more in some ways than I have trusted anyone in a long time.

I would feel sorry for the boy who came after my first love, except that he was kind of a douche. But it’s true, he never realized that he was the rebound guy, and once I understood this to be true, I was kind of done.

My Young Man ™ is so much like my first love that I kind of feel like I’ve been given a second chance, to make it better, to make it right.
