Maybe you should change your plans.

It’s a gorgeous day, I thought to myself. Sunny, and new-fallen snow lying, as the song says, “deep and crisp and even”. I thought, maybe I’ll go skating today. Maybe even go for a walk through the valley. Maybe I’ll get out my skiis and ski out into the fields and just listen to winter all around me. Days like this, I thought to myself, I love winter.

I stared out the window, transfixed at the early morning fog. I was mesmerised by the stillness of everything, by the way the snow lay like the proverbial blanket over everything in our yard, the way it cushioned the steep peaks of our neighbours’ homes (and of ours as well, I presumed, though I hadn’t yet gone to look at the back yard). Then I saw it. I want you to look closely at that photograph and tell me what you see. Look very closely. There it is. There you have it.

In case you didn’t see it very clearly, I shall post a close-up for you:
That’s right. You’re reading that correctly. It’s thirty-seven degrees below zero.

O WINTER, THOU FOUL MISTRESS! THINE FROZEN HEART HATH AGAIN FOULED OUR MOST CHERISHED PLANS! WOE! WOE AND FIE, VILE ARCTIC TART! WHY MUST YOU TEMPT US SO?

It was a balmy -24C yesterday, so the SMA and I went cross-country skiing.

I think that “In the Bleak Midwinter” is more the song for right now than anything else, don’t you? Also, my word verification for this is “ouppho,” which, oddly enough, is the very sound I make when I go out into weather like what we are having right now.

Fu-king-hell. I am hating this. I wanted to go out and slide, or skate or even walk this holiday break, but I am barely able to stomp the cold off my feet from bringing in the groceries to go back out again and plug in the car. I love…love, LOVE winter. I like going out and making fires to roast marhmellows or drink hot cocoa. I love walking in the glittering diamonds of the midnight skies. I love it, even if its kind of chilly. I mean, when we cheer if the temps go up to -20 thats terribly sad. So this cold spat has got to go. I have winter to meet and greet. I have snow drifts begging me to shuffle them. And I have a family that on bad days I love to bits, but if I have to sit one more day in this house, I shall sit squarely in front of my computer and type…all work and no play makes jenn a dull girl.dammitall.

I *know*!At least, tomorrow night, it should be nice enough for us to skate on the backyard rink. Here’s hoping, anyway.

Of course, tomorrow when I have to go back to work after two weeks of being home with it too cold to take the wee lad outside, it is supposed to go up to -4. How rotten is that??

Hey, um, we had a cold snap this week. I think it might have gone below 20 above zero overnight on Monday.I am entirely willing to find job placements for any Canadians willing to live in paradise.
