Look up. Look waaaay up.

I’m getting pretty tired of everyone talking about a domed stadium.

We have a stadium that’s perfectly serviceable, provided it gets some work done on it. Spend $40 million on the stadium we *have*. Put heated, vibrating seats in there for that matter. We don’t need a new stadium. It’s kind of like how I’ve been talking about getting a new car. I don’t need a new car. I need to fix the car I have (incidentally, if you’re handy with a wrench, you wanna fix my car?).

When the stadium we have sells out every game for three seasons in a row, start talking to me about a new stadium. Every big stadium that’s been built in the last few years has lost money. But I don’t really care about the money, to be honest.

Here are some of the more compelling (read:asinine) arguments *for* building a new stadium:

“We can have big rock concerts.”
“We can have sporting events year-round.”
“People laugh at us because our stadium is old.”
“We’re the laughingstock of the CFL.”
“More people could go to the games.”
“It wouldn’t be so cold.”
“It would attract more tourists.”

!?
I’m not against progress or change, but I just think it’s a huge money sink. For very little gain in the long run. Put that money into the public education system, and if you want to support sports and rock concerts, earmark it for physical education and music education. $40 million investment in Regina’s public schools would maybe fix some leaky rooves. Or buy some textbooks. Or maybe would pay for a new education consultant who would convince people that the idea of not failing students when they don’t know the material is *more* than asinine; it’s dangerous. Put that $40 million into the provincial health care system. It wouldn’t go very far, but maybe you could use that money to hire some more specialists. Put it into arts and culture funding; then maybe you’d have a generation of kids growing up who have a greater understanding of the world they live in.

There. I’ve said my piece about the gorram stadium.
